# live location

> share your live location once in Telegram so Folk knows where you are when location matters.

this is one of Folk's quietest useful tricks. share your **live location** in
Telegram once, and Folk knows where you are across every conversation. no
commands, no fuss. that one thing unlocks reminders that fire at the right
place and proactive texts when they actually help.

## turn it on (no command needed)

you don't need a slash command. you just share your location the normal Telegram
way:

### open the attachment menu

in your chat with Folk, tap the **attachment** icon and choose **location**.

### pick "share live location"

choose **share my live location** (not the one-time pin), and pick how long:
**15 minutes, 1 hour, or 8 hours**.

### that's it

Folk starts getting your position every minute or two while you're sharing, and
it shows up on your Folk dashboard too. want to keep going past 8 hours? just
share again.

> **not sure how?**
>
send Folk **`/geoloc`** any time and it'll walk you through these exact steps.
`/geoloc` is just the how-to. sharing your location is what turns the
  feature on.

## it syncs to your folk, everywhere

once you've shared, your latest spot is saved to **your Folk**, not just that one
chat. so Folk can answer "what's near me?" or "where am i?" without you
re-sending a pin, and it shows on your [dashboard](https://getfolk.app) too. (it
treats your position as current for about an hour, then asks for a fresh share so
it never acts on stale info.)

## reminders that fire at the right place

this is where it gets fun. tell folk to remind you of something **based on where
you are**, and it'll text you when you're actually there:

> remind me to grab oat milk next time i'm near a grocery store

> when i'm near the post office, remind me to mail the package

Folk quietly watches for it in the background and pings you at the spot. then
backs off so it's never naggy.

## folk texting you, proactively

with live location on, Folk can reach out **on its own** when it's genuinely
useful. these land as gentle, silent notifications you see when you next open
Telegram:

  - errand moments: 'you're right by Whole Foods. want to knock out that grocery list?'
  - gentle accountability: told Folk a goal? 'heads up, you're about a block from Chipotle.' only if you asked it to watch for that.
  - new places: land somewhere new and Folk might check in: 'looks like you're in Seoul. how is it?'

Folk is careful about this. there's a small daily limit so it never spams you,
and you're always in control (see below).

## staying in control

  - stop sharing: tap the live location message in Telegram and choose 'stop sharing'. Folk stops getting updates immediately.
  - /nudges off: pause Folk's proactive messages entirely (or /nudges snooze 24h).
  - disconnect: clear your stored location from your dashboard under settings → connections.
  - forget a reminder: tell Folk to drop a place-based reminder and it's gone.

Folk only uses your location for the things you've asked for, and it doesn't
track you in the background. updates only flow while *you're* actively sharing
in Telegram. see [privacy, plans & keys](/docs/privacy-plans-and-keys).

## on iMessage

Apple doesn't let apps receive live location, so ongoing location sharing is a
**Telegram** thing for now. on iMessage you can still paste an **Apple Maps link**
when you want Folk to know about a specific spot. handy for
[planning a date](/docs/plan-a-date) or finding what's [nearby](/docs/local).
